Well THAT is actually quite abit more obvious than the jewel thing... and all this stuff about legal matters is erm.... overkill?...
Anyways, i as a player has never actually found any names to be offensive at all.. just... crafty. So i take it as ppl actually complain to anet about in game player names?.. seems obsurd to me... i mean, rude comments may be offensive but a name is... not actually targeted at any1, there is no intention to offend

Ya know, since it seems racial issues top any other in modern society.

G? Possibly as in a slang contraction of the word Gangster? Had a guy come on my counterstrike server calling himself G-Unit Soldier the other night - there's an instaban right there, just for having such a wannabe name...
:P
Anyways, on to topic: There's a difference between the word filter when creating and names that get banned after x months, I guess.
I would suppose that the word filter was created by a group of individuals to try to eliminate all potentially offensive names - that's never going to be a success no matter how hard they try, because people who wish to offend will do their best to find a way around it.
Existing names that get banned are most likely the result of someone (a player or staff member) stumbling across the name and noting the potential for offensiveness in it, or being offended by it. In these cases it would be great if the players were offered the chance to change the name first...
Anyway, I'm not too sure how it works in other countries, but here in the UK, in cases of offense or harrasment the law says it doesn't matter if you intended offense. Only the opinion of the 'victim' matters. Now its possible that if I saw an offensive name or offensive content from a player, I could turn around and sue Areanet directly for failing to prevent it, to which they'd have to prove they took appropriate measures. So I guess it makes more sense that they are over-zealous to protect both the players and themselves even though it has some odd results...
Contrary to that, I know of a character called Moist Flange that has existed for well over 6 months without any trouble - maybe that's just luck

Its interesting and thanks for the reply Faith Angelis.
Reacting to your post, for one english word (mostly for offensive words) there are plenty of hungarian words and i can easily recognize if a hungarian won in HoH or something else, but it's not offend me, so i won't ruin his/her game by reporting.
Mostly they use for PvP characters and as far as i know hungarians don't report each other for bad name useage. Its just a little percent that use such names and they to do their best to sound it really funny
I manage the hungarian fansite now (news, updates ... etc.) and i have an unwritten rule for guild registration: reporting offensive names, but so far noone sent

This has nothing to do with the PC police.
If you are looking for freedom with language I suggest playing a game rated for Mature.
This is pointless. Names have such a minimal affect on your enjoyment. You guys are making mountain out of mole hills. Not like you are making some important social commentary with your names that will benefit the mass.
Even if you did and try, GW the game is the wrong place to do so.

and basicly you are just arguing for arguements sake and not actually taking the point at hand into consideration.
whatever floats your boat but its funny i once knew a player who was a gutless jerk called crimson ________ and he used to come out with the most offensive talk in whisper to females that played the game

You can't use numbers in your name, I'm almost certain. It could just be no one noticed him yet or he hasn't been reported.

Think Ive seen him before. That could potentially be taken(token? Sorry, had to ) as a social commentary, as many TV shows and movies, in order to be more "diversified", will have a character, or mupltiple characters, of "non-white" racial backgrounds. Think about it, how many "black" characters do you see in-game? Not too many, Id guess, I know I dont, and I play alot. In short, with me, "Token Black Guy" = not offensive.

I wasn't offended at all, in fact, I thought it was funny (add to that the fact that he WAS a black character). The only reason I mentioned it was someone earlier said they couldn't use "token" during the character creation process which started the discussion of "token black guy" being the (possible) reason. If that is the reason you can't use "token" .. it's rather ironic.
